The LA Galaxy sit atop the Sportify Power Rankings with an ELO Rating of 1564, slightly edging out FC Dallas who face the lower-ranked New York Red Bulls tonight in Harrison. The Galaxy’s 5-2 win over Real Salt Lake forced RSL to slide one position, but the Claret & Cobalt have an opportunity for redemption with a win over a struggling Dynamo at Rio Tinto on Saturday night. LA travel to Kansas City to face a Wondo-wounded Wiz in hopes of extending their 5 game lossless streak to six on Sunday.
The biggest movers after Week 8 were the Seattle Sounders, up two positions, and the Orlando City, down two positions. Despite the loss at the home of the Rapids and a Jermaine Jones determined to block out the haters, the Sounders were boosted by poor results from Cascadia neighbors Vancouver Whitecaps and by the Orlando City 3-2 loss to the Red Bulls.
Not making any moves in the Power Rankings or the pitch is NYCFC. The Bronx team is winless in 7 and even though David Villa leads the league with shots on goal, the team isn’t getting enough out of Tommy with the good hair.
The method: The Elo rating system
Elo ratings are a calculation of performance in head-to-head competitions originally developed for chess. This method has been used to rate a variety of competitions, including soccer. For each team, the calculation considers final scores, margin of victory, home field advantage and strength of schedule.
Sportify builds on existing ELO methodology, improving the season starting rating by using a combination of a proportion of a team’s rating in the previous season and a proportion of the league’s average rating. Wins always add points and losses always deduct points. Unexpected results, such as the upset of a strong team by a lower rated team, cause a greater fluctuation in points compared to “expected” results.
