Our Power Rankings are now available in a widget form for the English Premier League, LigaMX and Major League Soccer. You can view rankings for the latest game week and also see rankings from previous game weeks of the current season.
Teams are ranked based on a rating which is built on a tried and true methodology for comparing competitors called Elo. Elo ratings are a calculation of performance in head-to-head competitions originally developed for chess. This method has been used to rate a variety of competitions, including soccer. For each team, the calculation considers final scores, margin of victory, home field advantage and strength of schedule.
Sportify builds on existing Elo methodology, improving the season starting rating by using a combination of a proportion of a team’s rating in the previous season and a proportion of the league’s average rating. Wins always add points and losses always deduct points. Unexpected results, such as the upset of a strong team by a lower rated team, cause a greater fluctuation in points compared to “expected” results. In other words, if a team produces a lower than expected result, it may lose points to reflect its true skill.
In addition to the win-lose-draw result, scores and venues receive special consideration. The calculations take into account the margin of victory and where the match was played: at home, away or – this applies particularly to tournaments – at a neutral venue.
Together, these considerations built upon a sound mathematical foundation provide for a quality rating system for ranking teams. We published rankings for Copa América Centenario in partnership with Univision and Lexus, and we plan to publish rankings for additional leagues and competitions.
